Sustainability can be Sexy

More Hampstead Heath than Heath Robinson, this chic and thought-provoking garden shows that sustainability and recycling can be sexy. Helen Ellison has designed a clever and practical family garden with areas for play and entertaining and space from home-grown produce. The wildflower meadow and log walls encourage butterflies and insects.

This elegant garden has a negative carbon footprint; almost all the materials featured are recycled, from the glass path and patio area to the stone used in the water feature, which has been reclaimed from a Victorian pumping station. On close inspection, you can see that the hammock is made from recycled seat belts and the sail from knitted carrier bags, an ingenious use for this most hated villain of environmentalists.

Sustainability can be Sexy is a thought-provoking design that shows how a normal family garden can be transformed to create a fantastic space for everyone without adversely affecting our environment. In short, this is a garden to delight those with an eye for design, sustainability or just fantastic plants – this is a flower show after all!
