The Homebase Room with a View
This garden has been designed for entertaining and family time. The family enjoys visiting open gardens and growing their own produce, and they are keen environmentalists. The design has been inspired by a visit to Rievaulx Temples and Terrace in north Yorkshire, where in the 18th century Thomas Duncombe II would take his guests along the terrace walk to enjoy the stunning views before entertaining in the Ionic Temple. The Homebase Room with a View reflects this by accessing surrounding views through different aspects and levels. The garden room has large openings which frame planting and vistas, whilst an eco roof garden has vantage points over ornamental borders and the surrounding landscape. The maple glade is underplanted with meadow grass, and the boundary hedge allows glimpses of the adjacent landscape.
Environmental aspects have been considered in the garden’s construction, accessories and planting scheme. The productive vegetable plot incorporates organic principles, including companion planting, whilst the drought-tolerant planting in the eco roof garden is grown in a sustainable recycled medium.
Planting throughout the garden is ‘contemporary natural’, mixing wild species and cultivars for year-round interest in a contemporary design. Taller plants give a striking see-through effect in the main herbaceous border.
