Benecol's Prism Corner – supporting Rainbow Trust

This garden has been inspired by some of life’s rich treasures – our health, our children and light and colour. The designer, who comes from Norway where parts of the country are in darkness for long periods of the year, has experimented here with the effects of light. The central theme is the splitting of white light to create a rainbow, encouraging others to play with colour in their own gardens.

A silver birch, planted in the corner outside the main garden, represents the white light that spreads through the design in the spectrum of the rainbow. The garden has three sections; in the first, a green ray divides the warm and cool boldly coloured annual planting. A statue of Seb, by Brian Alabaster, sits at the edge, contemplating the garden. A painted path in the second section, wide enough for wheelchairs, dissects coloured planting that contrasts with the black raised beds. In the third section, blocks of planting inspired by the former Hadspen garden are softened with grasses. In this section, crystals, prisms and water play with the sunlight, scattering colour across the garden.
